How Often Should You Get Your Teeth Cleaned?

Team General Dentistry

You have likely heard the adage that the only teeth you need to take care of are the ones you want to keep. While brushing, flossing, and other forms of home dental care are imperative to maintaining good dental health, having your teeth professionally cleaned on a regular basis is another essential piece of caring for your mouth.

Failure to receive a dental cleaning on a regular basis significantly increases the chances for a myriad of oral health problems to develop, from cavities to gingivitis and beyond. But how often should you have them cleaned?

The Importance of Routine Dental Cleanings

Teeth naturally and gradually accumulate plaque and tartar on their surfaces. Plaque and tartar formation continues to occur even when someone brushes and flosses every single day.

It doesn't matter if you eat a vegan diet, are a non-smoker, or currently have perfectly healthy gums. Plaque and tartar buildup can happen just the same.

Without a professional cleaning to remove unwanted substances, bacteria can also build up. The surfaces of the teeth can break down and decay, and the gum tissues can become irritated, sensitive, and even infected. Not only are these issues potentially painful with a negative impact on the look of your smile, but they can also impact your overall health.

If left in place, dental plaque can calcify onto the teeth. If calcification occurs, a professional teeth cleaning with special tools and a skilled approach is necessary. Unfortunately, there's no other way to remove the calcified plaque from teeth.

How Often Should You Have a Professional Teeth Cleaning?

Due to the risks associated with plaque and tartar buildup, everyone should have a professional teeth cleaning at least once every six months. These regular visits will help prevent the heavy buildup of tartar and plaque.

In addition, your dentist can check your overall oral health at these visits. During your visit, they will examine your gums, teeth, and mouth for signs or symptoms of tooth decay, periodontal disease, and other oral health problems. They will also inquire about any issues you might be experiencing or chances you have noticed.

Twice yearly cleanings and check-ups will help catch any dental issues early on and preserve and improve your oral health.

Depending on their dental health and specific dentistry needs, some patients may require more frequent cleanings and check-ups. Always listen to your dental care provider and schedule return visits as frequently as they recommend.
